Un Chief Invokes Shimla Agreement

Islamabad had asked the UN chief to play his «paying role» after New Delhi`s decision to lift J&K`s special status. Amid a weakening of india-Pakistan relations after India scrapped 370 Artickes granting special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, UN chief Antonio Guterres on Thursday called on India and Pakistan to show «maximum restraint.» He also urged the two neighboring countries not to take any measures that could affect the status of Jammu and Kashmir, while stressing the Shimla agreement, which refuses any mediation by third parties on this issue. According to the report, the reference to the shimla agreement is, in a way, a rejection of Pakistan`s attempts to request UN intervention in this matter, given that the 1972 pact provides the framework for the bilateral settlement of the dispute. .
